While we miss being more fully involved in the remaining process, we fully support Mr. Hoyle's reorganized efforts and even testified in support this morning at the Maui County Council for the approval of the necessary land use entitlements for his new site from Agriculture to Public/Quasi-Public for proper zoning for medical services.
From the Maui News, May 6, 2015
We have also been testifying in strong support for MMMC to receive the necessary and essential financial support and flexibility to sustain prudent hospital operations. We pledge to continue to support MMMC every way we can as it is our only hope for full hospital services here on Maui Island.
It is our remote isolation from MMMC on West Maui that places a daily census of over 50,000 people at an unacceptable level of risk from access to Emergency Medical Care under the "golden hour."
We have been involved in seeking better access to emergency healthcare services to West Maui since 1999, right after we paid for and built our Napili Fire and Ambulance Station in West Maui as the first step. This was unprecedented but proved our ability to have a solid track record of responsibility and set the stage for our West Maui Hospital Efforts
We are more or less relegated to be in a "cheer leader role" at this time with no official authority whatsoever.... only to direct inquiries to a web site at www.westmauihospitalandmedicalcenter.org. There are physician employment and investment opportunities in this project we understand. Mr. Hoyle has selected Critical Access Hospitals LLC, President and CEO, Charlie Slayton to be the Hospital Lead Management. We hope that you can find the information you require from their web site accordingly.
The enormous amount of research and paperwork; coordinated with professional consultants, was primarily conducted via our West Maui Improvement Foundation Inc.., (WMIF), administrative efforts. Our friends and supporters in the community contributed nearly $890,000 to this effort which included reimbursements to WMIF from Brian Hoyle and Newport Hospital Corporation of approximately 50% of our costs.
The WMIF essentially carried the ball all the way to the finish line in obtaining the Certificate of Need from the State of Hawaii Planning and Department Administration (SHPDA), for Developer Brian Hoyle, and Newport Hospital Corp. (NHC). Mr. Hoyle has subsequently asked us to "pass the baton," on to him and his new team to take over at his newly acquired 15 acre site he purchased in Kaanapali North Beach from Kaanapali Land Management Corporation late last year.
The WMIF seems to have been legally separated and divorced from any official remaining role in the process and we simply have to accept that and appreciate that it is moving forward. We remain committed to the goals. West Maui deserves timely access to emergency medical services and the highest quality health care services. We will continue to do all we can to help Mr. Hoyle and this project to be successful accordingly.
